How my Chalazion went away!
I never did post an update regarding the Chalazion that I had in my left eyelid which you can read here.
After using Maxitrol for a week on my eyelid – NOTHING HAPPENED! And so, I did some research and used GENTAMICIN SULFATE. And then, the small lump in my eyelid seemed to shrink. Or at least that was I was trying to tell myself!
4 days passed and I ended up looking like Dracula! People were deliberately avoiding me – because I looked like I had a sore eye! The Gentamicin only made it worse!
NEVER SELF-MEDICATE WHEN IT COMES WITH YOUR EYES! Believe me! (I hope I did not ruin your appetite with this photo.)
So, I was forced to go see another ophthalmologist. I went to St. Luke’s and knocked on the door of Eye Republic. I didn’t have an appointment, but I waited for just 10 minutes before my turn came up.
The good doctor was kind and understanding enough to TELL ME THAT I WAS STUBBORN TO USE Gentamicin
He was also very thorough in explaining how a Chalazion comes about. He said that a Chalazion is very much like a pimple. One of my oil glands in my eyelid was blocked with infection. This often occurs when you use a lot of make-up on your eyelid… BUT I DON’T EVEN USE MAKE-UP! Aaargh…
So, he prescribed TOBRADEX – OINTMENT for my eyelid and EYEDROPS for my Gentamicin brouhahaha…
I had to apply hot compress on my left eye for 10-20 minutes and then apply TOBRADEX on my left eye and eyelid 4 Times a day for 7 days.
TOBRADEX ointment and eye drop application:
Hold the tube in your hand for a few minutes to warm it up so that the ointment comes out easily. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down gently on your lower eyelid. Apply a thin film of the ointment on a cotton bud and rub it into your lower eyelid. After 1-2 minutes place one to two drops of TOBRADEX in your left eye. And close your eye for 2-3 minutes.
Voila! It started to shrink.
I came back after a week and he prescribed antibiotics for another week and he advised me to continue with the TOBRADEX application.
After another week – it was gone. I didn’t have to have it surgically removed after all!

Quick question for you, if the Chalazion is on the the upper eyelid and not the lower eyelid… when applying the ointment should I:
- Apply it to the lower left eye lid and then roll my eyes around so that it can reach the inside of the upper eyelid?
- Apply it directly to the upper eyelid?

Hi Sadiq… Use a hot/ warm compress on your closed eye for 5-10 minutes and then the ointment needs to be apply on the edge of the upper eyelid itself… But, still have it checked with your doctor if it’s possible. Thanks!
